First Post

Posted on Sep 22, 2025

This is not my first blog. It’s not even my first blog that’s actually running. My main blog is over at elissablack.com, where I mostly talk about my game dev work. And that’s fine, of course. I even used to write personal blog posts there, though not in a while.

So how did this come about, and what is it?

I spent the last week or two offline. No social media, beyond browsing pixelfed because it’s quite relaxing to just look at photos. (Remember that? What Instagram used to be before it vanished up its own posterior?)

I felt oddly compelled to write things and post them, however, but also didn’t want to go back to being terminally online via microblogging sites.

I wanted somewhere to post small thoughts, ideas, links, or anything else I wanted, more regularly and more easily than with a bloated WordPress site. And having recently written a guest blog post over at Ron’s site, I discovered myself quite drawn by the simplicity of hugo, a static-page generator for very simple blogs.

No mess, no scripts or logins to muck around with. Just vim, markdown, and that’s about it. And, of course, it supports an RSS feed.

So I came up with a witty and great** name for a blog, registered the dot com, and here I am.

There’s something kind of relaxing about writing blog posts from a terminal window on an iPad.
